Connect it to the coax line and power it up. Let it fully sync up with the system ('Online' light is steadily lit).
Connect a computer to it and open up a browser. You.may. see their 'Walled Garden' modem self registration page. If so, follow the screen prompts. Have your account number handy. If not, try calling 1-855-652-3446. That is their device activation line.
If that doesn't work for you you can call 1-800-comcast and tell a rep that you would like to have a new modem provisioned for service. Have the RF / HFC MAC address and the serial number of it handy when you call.
Since its going wide spread i was wondering if anyone knows how the new self provisioning software works in the legacy areas. I figure we should discuss it some.
Is there a way to provision with win98fe? I hear once its in place you can no longer just call it in.
Is this true? Can you just hook up a laptop to provision it and power cycle the modem and hook another machine up. (i hear you cant) 4. Can you provision thru a router? Does it attach itself the nic mac addy also. Can you use it to swap modems?
Any other thoughts on how it works. If it works the way im told it works that would s'ck but i was also told comcast really wants it used. Still no answer from Comcast on the e-mail i sent,i don`t think they got it.
Something is wrong.I tried the first time when i hit the submit button i got that dam cannot display page. So i closed down the website, reopened and sent them another.
This time when i hit submit it looked like everything worked. But in the past when i send them a e-mail in 30 mins i would get one of those computer generated messages say that they had got the message and an answer would come shortly. But have not received anything. Said by: Qumahlin if you see this thread would you have anymore in information on the new provisioning? You know what.

Honestly how I was told it would work and how it was first setup to work has been changed. It went from being easy, to a PITA. So right now I honestly couldn't tell you at this time. I do know however that reps will always be able to provision the customers modem if the customer is unable to do so.
I attempted to 'play' with the system upon reading this thread when it first started and all that yielded was me sending in 3 bug reports on how to 'borrow' service using self provisioning:P So I expect some changes to be coming in the near future. The comcast cd wont run on 98 fe. The modem can still be provisioned on non supported os's, but it just takes longer (sometimes days) to have it manually pushed through. If your simply swapping a modem, the software is not required to be ran again.
You have to call in and have them add the modem to the account. It will simply provision it with the same level of service the prior modem had. You can provision with one machine, and hook it up to another machine as long as you power cycle the modem after switching machines.
The provisioning is not locked down to the nic mac. Once the modem is provisioned it acts like it did before self provisioning rolled out.

I should close my own loop - I was able to self-install the Motorola SB 6141 modem myself. The web screen that came up after switching from the rental modem/router was as if I had bought a Comcast self-install kit, but it worked. Once I was sure the Internet connectivity was fully functional, I returned the rental modem to Comcast, and they took the charge off my bill that day. Still haven;t had tomake a call to Comcast. One oddity is that the old cable modem/router and its MAC address still shows up under My Equipment, but the bill is clean of any charge for that. Comcast also isn't showing the serial number for my Motorola modem on that same page, just the MAC address for the new modem.
All user-supplied hardware must be recognized by Comcast through a telephone call. You need the MAC address and model number of the router in order to given this information to the Comcast internet support person. Comcast maintains a 'Acceptable Modem Hardware list' on their web site. This link will direct to browse through the list. I use this model for the last two years without any issues.
Make & Model: Motorola sb6121 If I buy my own cable modem, how do I register it with Comcast? RCN has self-provisioning where a screen appears on your browser once you connect the new cable modem. Does Comcast do this, or do you have to call them with the MAC address, etc.? I should close my own loop - I was able to self-install the Motorola SB 6141 modem myself.
